The calendar rhythm

The royal necropolis opens every day except 1 January, 1 May and 25 December, though it closes at times, in part or entirely, for religious services; the monument's own website lists these exceptional closures. It opens later on Sundays, and closing time is later from April to September than from October to March, when a winter afternoon ends sooner.

Quiet days versus busy ones

Weekday mornings outside French school holidays tend to be the calmest, while weekends and holiday weeks draw the most visitors, especially around midday. If an unhurried look at the tombs matters to you, an early weekday visit is the safer bet.

Why Mondays are different

The Fabrique de la flèche, the visitable workshop where the basilica's north tower and spire are being rebuilt, is closed on Mondays, though the royal tombs stay open. If watching the stonework in progress is part of why you're coming, choose any day but Monday.

A sound choice in bad weather

Almost the entire visit — the choir, the tombs and the crypt — is indoors, which makes Saint-Denis a reasonable pick on a wet Paris day, when the city's outdoor sights are less rewarding.
